Minecraft Preview 26.70.21 Packed Ice Bricks Guide
See what Minecraft Preview 26.70.21 adds for Packed Ice Bricks, how the new ice sounds trigger, and where to join the Bedrock Preview or Android Beta.
Last updated: 2026-10-21
Minecraft Preview 26.70.21 adds a decorative Packed Ice Bricks family and new ambient sounds for ice. It is a Bedrock test build released on October 20, 2026—not a Java Edition update or the current stable Bedrock release. The bricks do not melt, and Mojang says a pickaxe is the best tool for breaking them.

Testing, not stableWhat changed for Packed Ice builders?
The official 26.70.21 changelog introduces a blue-tinted brick set made from Packed Ice. The announced family includes:
- Packed Ice Bricks
- Packed Ice Brick slabs
- Packed Ice Brick stairs
- Packed Ice Brick walls
- Chiselled Packed Ice Bricks
These are decorative building blocks. They keep the useful cold look of Packed Ice without melting, and a pickaxe is their best tool. Mojang's changelog does not give a crafting grid or output count, so this guide does not invent one. Use the recipe book in the current Preview or Beta when you need the exact recipe for that build.
The same changelog says naming, instrumental sounds, Creative Inventory placement, and waterlogged behavior are still being finalized. Treat a layout built in 26.70.21 as Preview work: back up the world and expect details to move before stable release.
How the new ice sound condition works
An ice block can become a candidate for the new ambient sound only when all of these conditions are present at the same time:
- At least eight ice blocks to the north on the same level.
- At least eight ice blocks to the south on the same level.
- At least eight ice blocks to the east on the same level.
- At least eight ice blocks to the west on the same level.
- One air block directly above the candidate ice block.
- One water block directly below it.

Cross-section
That means eight blocks total is not enough, and a complete 17-by-17 ice floor is not required by the wording of the changelog. Four straight horizontal arms meet the stated direction test. Even then, the sound only has a chance to play. Silence on the first attempt does not prove the layout is wrong.
Packed Ice, Blue Ice, and Frosted Ice each receive their own sound events in this build. The notes do not say that every mix of ice types produces the same result, so keep a test setup simple if you are comparing the sounds.
Build a clean test setup
- Open a disposable Preview/Beta world or a copy of a world you can afford to lose.
- Choose one ice block as the center. Place eight or more ice blocks in a straight line from it in each cardinal direction.
- Leave the block directly above the center as air.
- Put water directly below the center ice block.
- Stand nearby and wait. Because playback is chance-based, give the setup more than one opportunity before changing it.
- If nothing plays, recount every arm from the center and check the vertical air/ice/water stack. Also confirm that the game is actually running 26.70.21.
This is an ambient audio test, not a redstone trigger or a guaranteed music block. The Preview notes are the boundary for what can be claimed about the mechanic right now.
Preview, Beta, stable Bedrock, or Java?
| Build | Where it applies | What 26.70.21 means |
|---|---|---|
| Preview | Xbox, PlayStation, Windows, and iOS | The official Bedrock test build |
| Beta | Android through Google Play | Android's test channel for this content |
Stable Bedrock | Normal retail game | Do not assume these test features are here yet |
| Java Edition | PC Java client | This Bedrock changelog does not apply |
Preview and Beta worlds may be incompatible with stable releases or behave unpredictably. Make a copy before opening an important world, and do not expect multiplayer with people on a different build to work normally.

Use Mojang's Minecraft Preview FAQ for Xbox, PlayStation, Windows, and iOS. Android players join or leave the Beta through the official Google Play process. On Android, the Beta replaces the normal Minecraft app while enrolled, which is another reason to back up worlds first.
Do not install an APK offered by a guide, video description, or file mirror. LocatorBar does not host the game or a Preview download. Platform availability and enrollment steps can change, so the official help pages are the right place to confirm the button you should see today.

Block properties, variants, the ambient-sound layout, platform list, and known work-in-progress notes were checked against Mojang's October 20, 2026 changelog and official Preview/Beta help links on October 21, 2026. This page will keep the version number in its title so later stable changes are not silently presented as facts about 26.70.21.
