Minecraftle: Original Game, Rules, Daily and Random Modes

Find the original Minecraftle crafting puzzle, understand its ten guesses and colour feedback, and keep Daily, Random and same-name games separate.

Last updated: 2026-10-29

Minecraftle is a browser puzzle about finding a hidden Minecraft crafting recipe. The original project's Daily game is at minecraftle.zachmanson.com. You work with the supplied ingredients and have ten guesses; the colours tell you which placements fit the target.

This guide covers that author's site. Rules and public documentation were checked October 29, 2026. We have not played a round, submitted a guess or verified today's answer. This page explains the game and links to it; it does not host a playable copy or publish daily solutions.

How to play the original Minecraftle

Start with the game's How To Play page, then open Daily or Random:

  1. Look at the ingredients supplied by the puzzle.
  2. Arrange a candidate crafting recipe on the grid and submit the guess using the game's controls.
  3. Read the feedback for each placed ingredient.
  4. Use those clues to choose your next candidate, within the ten-guess limit.

The objective is the secret recipe, not a Minecraft username, a mob name or a spelling puzzle. Knowing what an ingredient can craft helps, but its position also matters.

What do grey, orange and green mean?

The original rules describe this default colour scheme:

FeedbackMeaning in the original rules
GreyThat ingredient is not in the target recipe.
Orange

The ingredient belongs in the recipe, but in a different position.

GreenThe ingredient and its position are correct.

The site also exposes a High Contrast option. The names above follow its published default legend; do not borrow a different site's palette or scoring instructions just because it uses the Minecraftle name.

Daily versus Random

Use Daily for the dated challenge. Choose Random for a random practice puzzle instead. Both links are visible in the original site's navigation. A Random result is not a result for the Daily puzzle.

Before comparing a board with a friend's, compare the full domain and mode. An answer from another date, another mode or another implementation may not apply to your board. This guide does not provide a current reset-time guarantee or claim that stats transfer between modes or websites.

Why might a guess not be accepted?

In his January 26, 2023 v1.1 notes, Zach Manson records adding a check that guesses must be valid Minecraft recipes. An arbitrary arrangement made only to probe colours is therefore not a safe assumption about the intended rules. Start with a recipe you recognise and the ingredients the puzzle actually supplies.

Those notes also describe normalising item-tag alternatives to a preferred ingredient, using coal and charcoal as an example. They are historical release notes, not a promise that every interchangeable ingredient or recipe from the latest Minecraft release is accepted by today's site. We have not tested its current recipe validation.

Why can a shared win show nine green squares?

The same v1.1 post says the winning share summary was changed to nine green squares to conceal the solution's shape. That historical design explains why a shared grid is not necessarily a literal ingredient diagram. Do not use an all-green share image to conclude that the recipe requires nine ingredients.

Which Minecraftle site does this guide cover?

Use minecraftle.zachmanson.com to follow the original author's rules. The project repository links back to that domain and credits Zach Manson, Harrison Oates, Tamura Boog and Ivan Sossa. Zach's project overview describes its origins as a 2022 university project and its later rebuild.

The same name appears on other domains. Matching branding does not establish that the recipe pool, reset clock, controls or saved results are shared. If your game calls a mode Unlimited or adds an archive or hard mode, read that site's own instructions rather than importing those rules into this guide.

For a clue without a spoiler, revisit the original colour legend, keep the placements already confirmed green, and look for another valid candidate that fits the orange clues. The next step is the author's game, not an answer generator on this page.
